THE award of a “Purple Flag” – for high standards of safety and security at night – may result in an unexpected spin-off for the village of Stockton Heath.
Local traders, delighted with the news that the village has become the first in the country to win an award usually only given to towns and cities, have agreed to help with a long-standing problem – the lack of public toilets.
Local resident Helen Curwen, who was involved in the Purple Flag campaign as a member of the village’s Early Evening Economy working group, has persuaded 14 local businesses, including pubs, cafes and restaurants, to allow “non-customers” to use their toilets.
They will put “Purple Flag” stickers in their windows to say people can use their toilets.
The award came from the Association of Town Centre Management and follows the transformation of the village in recent years by the opening of numerous restaurants, bars and cafes.
The parish council is also delighted with its Purple Flag – particularly after receiving a note of congratulation from former local police chief, Inspector (now Detective Chief Inspector) Gary McIntyre.
He wrote from his new post in London to say it could not have happened to a better parish and community and wished the village well for the future.
