POLICE are warning thieves in Warrington that they may be risking their lives by stealing certain goods for their scrap metal value.
Officers warn those tempted to steal electrical cables could pay with their lives.
They say because of the increase in the value of metal, thieves have been targeting everything from grids, lead, lightening conductors and some are risking their lives trying to steal live electricity cables.
Assistant Chief Constable Ruth Purdie said: “No matter how valuable metal may be, trying to steal electricity cables can be a fatal mistake. These cables have thousands of volts of electricity coursing through them and could kill instantly.”
She said thieves often think that this crime is almost victimless and no-one, other than large corporations, suffers. But metal theft can disrupt rail networks, telephone lines, internet services, and almost always causes insurance premiums to rise.
It can have implications for businesses, homeowners and commuters. When an attempt is made to steal a live electricity cable the offender may also inflict themselves with serious or even fatal burns.
ACC Purdie said: “While we continue with our commitment to detect and deter those intent on stealing scrap metal, at the same time we want to send out a clear message that if you see a sign warning of live cables don’t be tempted to ignore it as you could be putting your life at risk.”
