Drive to get more foster parents

A TOTAL of 230 children and young people in Warrington currently need someone to care for them – and today (Tuesday) a campaign is launched to encourage people to become foster parents.
The “Don’t leave them hanging” campaign kicks off at 2pm in the Old Market in Golden Square.
Among those present will be existing foster carers, Warrington Wolves mascot Wolfie, Cllr Colin Froggatt, the borough council’s executive member for children and young people and Kath O’Dwyer, director for children and young people’s services.
The event will take place against a backdrop of 230 different children’s outfits hung on washing lines.
The campaign runs until October 23 in the Old Market with council staff and foster carers themselves on hand to give information and answer any questions you might have. Exciting arts and crafts activities for children will also be on offer at the launch as well as a display of foster carer artwork as part of Warrington Arts festival.
Cllr Froggatt (pictured) said: “This campaign is a fantastic way of raising awareness of the positive difference you could make to children’s lives by being a foster carer. Don’t leave children and young people hanging… why not pop along to the event and find out more about fostering.”
Paul Leicester, who recently became a foster carer, with his wife Sandra said:
‘We got involved in fostering because we thought we had a fair bit to offer and wanted to help and care for children. There’s lots of support at hand if we need it and it’s been working out really well. The child we’re currently caring for is a pleasure to spend time with and we feel that it’s a really worthwhile thing to do.”
Any applicant to become a foster carer over the age of 19 will be considered if they care about children. They will be fully supported throughout the recruitment and training process and support and supervision will continue throughout their fostering career.
