Parking charges slashed

COUNCIL chiefs at Warrington have slashed parking charges on one of the town’s major multi-storey car parks to help give a boost to town centre trade.
Shoppers using the Market car park on Academy Way from Saturday, (October 8) will pay just £1 for up to three hours Monday-Saturday, while Sunday is free all day from 7am to 9pm.
Currently, £1 pays for one hour on the car park, £1.60 pay for two hours and £2.30 buys four hours.
Cllr Mike Hannon, deputy leader of Warrington Borough Council, said: “As part of our pledge to support local traders we’re making it cheaper and easier for shoppers to visit the town centre and enjoy all Warrington has to offer.”
Last month, the council released figures show that the town centre was bucking the national trend by showing a footfall increase of 44,000 in July, compared with the same period last year.
But a national survey has shown that Warrington is one of the 10 worst towns in the country for empty shops.

  1. Excellent news and about time too 🙂 Will this reduced charge be permenant though or is it only temporary so as to keep people shopping while the Golden Square Car Park is closed for a few months during it’s access re-devlopement work etc as reported on here on 22 Sept. It will be closed until the end of November I believe? If permenant will we see a similar reduction in charges in the Golden Square carpark once that reopens ?

  2. A very cynical ploy being used by the Council. Of course it will only be temporary during the re-development works. WBC do not want Car users in the Town Centre as shown by its various schemes to exclude cars and make them pay steep charges. No wonder a large number of shops remain empty! They will remain empty for a long time uinless WBC changes its attitude towards cars using the Town Centre.

  3. Still far more expensive than the retail parks, Trafford Centre, Cheshire Oaks etc. where it’s FREE. Until WBC match this then they’re always going to lose out to proper shopping destinations.
