Consultation on social care charges

3

A MAJOR consultation has started at Warrington on moves to increase some charges for adult social care.
Changes are proposed on how the borough council calculates adult social care charges.
These are charges only made to people following a financial assessment that establishes they are able to make a contribution to the cost of their care.
The consultation will only look at what people pay to support them to live in the community – not what people pay for residential and nursing home care.
In Warrington, in real terms, charges have been kept at the same level since 2006. But, like other councils, Warrington is facing rising costs and demand for social care along with cuts in Government funding.
Changing the way that the council charges for services will help provision and quality of care services to be maintained at the same level. The proposed changes would also ensure the charging system is fairer.
The council wishes to find out from the people that may be affected by changes to the charging policy what they think of the proposals and how it may affect them, or the people that they know and care for.
Steve Reddy, assistant director, adult social care, at the council, said: ‘We haven’t reviewed our charges since 2006 and it is important to do so for both fairness and to ensure the council’s subsidy for care services is controlled.
“We are asking service users, carers, partner organisations and members of the public to share their views on the proposed changes and the results will be sent to the executive board in December for consideration.’

  1. Thanks I will pass this on to a lovely little old lady who called me into her house whilst I was out campaigning on Saturday in Fairfield and Howley, the proposed new WARRINGTON SOUTH. Anyway she bent my ear about the new Coalition charges for care so I will give her a call and pass on the details so that she can express her views to the council officers.

  2. I would have thought that you were too busy in your own Ward, Cllr Settle, now that you are one Councillor down, and not had time to be campaigning in another Ward, that I understand already has three Labour councillors, what are they doing, working in your Ward.

  3. Geoff, why didn’t you just tell the little old lady how it is…. that Labour have got in and now it is time to put all the costs up for the vulnerable members of society while advocating a nice rise in the Chief execs pay packet? Also, wasn’t it under a Labour government that many old folks had to sell their houses to fund residential care to fund not only their own care, but the care of many of the other residents too who didn’t save for their old age?
