A PLAN for a complete reconstruction of a major waste water pumping station at Warrington is to be put to the town’s planners.
United Utilities have drawn up proposals for the plant on land off Lilford Avenue, Bewsey.
But the site is important for its sensitive ecology and wildlife habitats and the company has agreed to contribute £35,000 towards the cost of providing compensatory maintenance and management of a Site of Importance for Nature Conservancy (SINC) elsewhere in the borough.
It will also do everything possible to restore the ecology/habitat value of the site itself – including minimising the loss of trees and hedgerows.
The plan involves a secure fenced extension to the existing pumping station compound including a control building, transformer compounds, outfall structure and the installation of a below-ground pumping station.
There will also be extensive landscaping.
The existing pumping station receives two large sewers, serving a population of more than 124,000. Its replacement is required by OFWAT and the Environment Agency as part of United Utilities’ region-wide programme of refurbishment.
Planning officers are recommending the scheme be approved – and no objections have been received.
