  1. Good to see Connexions still plugging away and promoting what they do best finding opportunities. I worked with them on a project last Easter in Liverpool with youngsters who are Not in Education, Employment or Training (NEET) for a few days on a business start programme. It not only brought home the need for these and similar services but the challenges. They and the YMCA should be applauded on this initiative. Well done

  2. I agree that it is good that this is taking place BUT WHY hold it between 10am and 3pm on a Monday and Friday. Many kids who had hoped to get apprentices in certain professions but couldn’t are now on the full time courses at college instead studying in the same subjest and therefore may NOT be able to attend at these times. WHY NOT hold it on a Saturday or in the evening too ??

  3. I agree with what Clr Settle says – Connexions have provided invaluable advice and support to my grandson who was really struggling to decide what career to follow. However – for how long will they be able to continue to do this as they’ve apparently lost considerable funding due to the cutbacks. I’ve been into their office a couple of times with my grandson and it was really busy with young people seeking help and advice on all issues, not just work related.

  4. Due to last terms cuts, Connexions can no longer run on a Saturday.

Also I would say that the reason they are holding the meeting at 10am till 3am is because it is ideally aimed at those out of college/school who are seeking apprenticeships. After all, those in school and college have personal advisor’s who are there to advertise and promote such apprenticeships within their learning environment.

However I would agree that the timing would be better around, say 1pm-6pm.

    But nothing is perfect 😉

  5. Speaking of NEET, I have just received the results from the NEET targets of this year:

Connexions had a target of reducing the numbers of NEET teenagers aged 16-18 by 10% in deprived areas from 2010 to 2011.

    These are the results:

    Bewsey and Whitecross- 24% reduction

    Fairfield and Howley- 14% reduction

    Latchford East- 7% reduction

    Orford- 27% reduction

    Poplars and Hulme- 23% reduction

    Poulton North- 41% reduction

And yet WBC are determined to close Connexions because it’s not a valuable service…

  6. that’s really bad news Tom – will surely result in even more NEETs, and have a knock -on effect on society as a whole. Not every young person has parents who can support and encourage – and Connexions also provided independent, confidential advice on personal issues too.
