Praise for council gritting teams

WARRINGTON Borough Council’s gritting teams have been praised for keeping the town’s main roads clear since the big freeze-up started.
Cllr Alan Litton, (pictured) the council’s executive member for environment and transport told last night’s meeting of the executive board: “We are being praised for the way we are keeping our main routes – and quite a few other routes – clear of snow and ice.
“People are telling us our roads are better than those of neighbouring authorities.
“This is exactly the opposite of what happened last year when we told our roads were worse than those of neighbouring authorities.”
Cllr Litton praised the council’s work force for their efforts.
He said the performance was even more praiseworthy because Warrington had suffered worse weather than other neighbouring areas.
The weather in Trafford, for instance, had been much less severe than in Warrington.

  1. What a load of rubbish. Isn’t that what they are supposed to do? The cars are happy when they get to the main roads, but what about the pedestrians who have to go out and shop and go to work? What has been done for them? NOTHING!!!

Get a grip WBC! Start earning the large amount of money that the residents of Warrington pay you. You don’t even do what it says on the tin.

  2. I cant comment on the state of neighbouring authorities roads as I have not dared to go out in my car due to the state of many of the smaller roads around here but others are saying they are far better..

However, I can comment on Wilderspool Causeway… yesterday the bus we were on slid on the ice at the edge of the road. There is a span of 3+ foot wide still at the edge where the cars/busses drive. According to the driver some bus routes are still either closed or running but STILL dangerous. Bridge Lane route at Appleton is now apparently back on route but he suspected thet the bus would get stuck again and he would have to be ‘rescued’. Also many of the side roads in Warrington Town Centre, especially those leading down to Wilson Pattern Street, are dangerous with 1/2 being ice and 1/2 being clear meaning drivers have 2 wheels on the ice and two on the clear. Many cars were skidding yesterday….. not good at all in a shopping area. So yes Cllr Litton the main routes may have been clearered quicker than they were last year but there is still a lot of work to be done to make them and all the other roads SAFE. No point in me mentioning the pavements and the newly paved areaa outside the Golden Square Shopping Centre !!!! DEADLY !!!!

  3. … forgot to say… well done to the chaps who go out in the gritters though as althought there are many areas untreated I realise that you are only following the councillors/managers orders as to where you should and should not grit 🙂

  4. What utter nonsense. What Mr Litton fails to mention is that this year the surrounding areas have had significatly more snow than we did here in Warrington so it dosn’t take a rocket scientist to work out the roads will be far easier to keep clear. Praise where its due but dont pat your own back too hard this has more to do with nature than anything than anything you can come up with.
