MORE than 1,200 people took part in a drumming workshop as part of an innovative youth event in Golden Square shopping centre, Warrington.
“Get Sorted,” a skills and talent event during half term was attended by more than 2,000 young people.
Youngsters were able to learn new skills and uncover their hidden talents. And by the end of the week, 50 young people had secured work placements and others were offered full-time jobs, including several at the Village Hotel.
Interactive workshops proved popular and included the drumming workshop, art and DJ workshops.
A local radio station broadcast live and held drop-in sessions on careers in radio. Five lucky Lysander High School students also had the opportunity to create and broadcast their own news bulletin.
The shopping centre has installed a Job Centre Plus wall, which displays local jobs and information for jobseekers.
During the event 40 young people volunteered to support a range of local community projects.
Alison Cullen, youth volunteer manager at the Volunteer Centre, said: “Get Sorted has helped to change the stereotype of volunteering for young people and we are delighted with the response.”
Golden Square marketing manager Ian Cox said “The success of the event is a tribute to the organisations that participated and the enthusiasm of the young people from the area who are clearly motivated to make the most of the opportunities available to them.”
