£750,000 facelift for school

TOWN Hall chiefs are being asked to appoint a contractor to carry out a major, £750,000 remodelling and refurbishment at a primary school in one of the most deprived areas of Warrington.
Members of the council’s executive board will be asked to appoint a firm to carry out the work at Oakwood Avenue Primary School over the next two years.
The borough council agreed a programme of capital spending on primary schools in 2008-09, in line with Government requirements.
A number of schools were identified as priorities for early investment based on the condition of buildings, suitability for improvement, numbers of pupils, deprivation indices and standards.
Oakwood Avenue Primary met the criteria as a school with buildings in a poor condition serving an area of high deprivation and where numbers of pupils were likely to remain high.
Over the last 12 months a project has been developed in collaboration with the school.
The project involves a number of elements which involve making good use of existing assets while significantly improving the internal organisation of the school and the layout of facilities on the site, including improved access.
Money is available in the council’s primary school capital programme.
If the lowest tender received exceeds the amount available, the scope of the works will be reduced to contain the cost within the available budget.
