STUDENTS from Warrington protesting
outside the Tory HQ in London over the proposed cap on tuition fees have
condemned extremists who hijacked the event.
A University of Chester spokesperson said: “The University of Chester is pleased to report that all its students who attended the march in London protesting against the raising of the cap on tuition fees, returned home safely and without incident.
“However, the 130 students who attended the protest from the University of Chester (including 37 from its Warrington campus,) have expressed their frustration that what had been advertised as a well-organised event was apparently hijacked by extremists.
“Higher education is designed so that students and staff can exercise their freedom of speech and exchange ideas and the University of Chester understands their views about the future of funding in this sector.
“However, in common with colleagues in Chester Students’ Union, it was appalled by the violence which erupted among a small minority of the demonstrators at Millbank, which has seriously threatened the points that the National Union of Students is seeking to convey.”
