Ex-Guardsman to fight election

A FORMER Coldstream Guardsman who has two sons currently serving in the Army is to fight next month’s Warrington Borough Council by-election for the Conservatives.
Businessman Lance Reah, from Latchford, who runs a security business in the town, was involved earlier this year in a campaign to get Armed Forces identity cards recognised as proof-of-age by licensed clubs.
He has two sons, aged 21 and 18, who are both following in his footsteps in the Coldstream Guards and launched his campaign when his younger son was refused admission to a town centre club, raising the issue with Warrington South MP David Mowat, who took the matter with Defence Secretary Liam Fox.
Warrington Borough Council subsequently amended its regulations to allow Armed Forces ID cards to be accepted as proof-of-age.
The by-election at Bewsey and Whitecross has been caused by the resignation of former Liberal Democrat councillor Professor Jo Crotty.
So far neither the Liberal Democrats nor Labour have named candidates although it is understood Labour Party officials are meeting tonight (Wednesday) to make a selection.
Nominations close at 12 noon this Friday and the election is on December 9.

  1. The residents of Warrington couldn’t get a better candidate – integrity, courage and sincerity – shame so few politicians share Mr Reahs values. I wish him all the very best. A good man who has demonstrated unwavering loyalty to this country, a thorough understanding of business and commitment to working for a living and a lead by example attitude.

  2. I live in Bewsey and i also have the honour to know Lance as a cracking bloke and a hard hitter when it comes to protecting and looking after people especially ex squaddies. I couldn’t think of anyone better than a real man with his experiences in the “real world” like Lance to do the job. Good luck Lance

  3. i had the honour to serve with lance on a tour of northan ireland wen it comes down to it he is a man of truth and honour & will fight tooth & nail for what is right his “real world” experiences are second to none he fought for his country as he will The residents of Warrington there is no finer gent to speek for then i could think of it is an honour to call him my friend

  4. Reading this article recently e mailed to me, I served alongside Lance for many years and know he will fight and help for those who need help ,he will always do what is right for the right reasons putting others first,he would be a credit to his local community and Warrington as a whole,People will know they have him on their side,a true gentleman and friend to all.

  5. What Bewsey needs is a Cllr that will stand up for the people. Not a jaded candidate. I like what I have heard about Lance Reah and look forward to a candidate with a bit of life experience sorting out our problems. Lance is exactly what Bewsey needs. Jon

  6. Wow, what accolades!!!

A man like that MIGHT HAVE BEEN useful in the fight for Bewsey Old Hall – but then fighting for what was important to the community would have been going against his own party’s policies wouldn’t it?

  7. Fair point Sha – but as with all politicians they should have the moral standing to start with and the courage to face up to problems most would shy from as is often the case councillors or MP’s often disagree with party policy I am sure Mr Reah is more than capable of making his own mind up on party policy – he isn’t known for mindless or thoughtless support.

Fighting isn’t really the right choice of words these days either Sha – representing views and tackling issues that are important to the community is probably more appropriate. As with all politicians they can’t appease all and it is not a job for the lightweight of heart. You have a solid man with integrity in Mr Reah – he listens well and will do what he says.

  8. Philip Lee quote….”I am sure Mr Reah is more than capable of making his own mind up…….” so we are to take it that he made his own mind up to NOT support the preservation of Bewsey Old Hall for the community. further quote….”he listens well and will do what he says.” In this instance he obviously didn’t listen to the voice of the thousands who signed the petition…..and did what HE thought was best…..nothing!!!! This is typical of the present council leaders who are elected to represent the public…..and who once elected do whatever THEY want!!!

People are heartily sick of empty promises.

  9. Give him a chance you may get a bit of surpise with this chap,i elieve he is giving his expences away i know f a man in the North East of Enland who started off the same way as an independant who now gets more done than any other councillior historically.

  10. Unfortunately we have experience on this site of Conservative politicians who say and brag about all the things they are going to do if they get elected and how they are their own person and aren’t infuenced by their party wishes……then when it happens and they get elected, they toe the party line and shut up; never to be heard again!

  11. Lance has been involved in training and nurturing security professionals for a while and at times gives his knowledge , experience and time for free, I personally have progressed in the security sector, thanks to Lance,s help and sound advice, he has limitless energy,is a great communicator and has an intuition for diversification , he can enthuse people quite easily and I only see him being a good and honest councillor who will help the community and get things done.

  12. Yes Baz, and…..Unfortunately we have experience of Conservative politicians who……. when they get elected, ….. toe the LIB DEM party line!!!!!!! (Reply to this comment)

  13. Gosh! the list of his fine qualities is unending! If he has even only half of those that you ascribe to him and is of such a sound and moral character then I’m sure he will already be very well known for his good works in the community…….there thus being no real need for all this, somewhat early, blatant electioneering. But then perhaps the Con campaign feels the need to start early because the candidate they have chosen is NOT already known to and involved in the community? But why pick an unknown candidate? The Cons must realise that locally the anger over the destruction of Bewsey Old Hall is still very raw and that their national policies and the recent cuts will not have made them popular with ordinary folk. Perhaps then they are hoping to rely on the age old manipulating tool…patriotism…..and that they think the ‘old Guardsman’ might just swing home?

Personally I just don’t think it’s going to work for them. They are just too far removed from the ordinary folk to realise that nobodies swallowing the ‘Big Society’ policies and it’s generally recognised that “We’re all in it together” means we’re certainly all in it!….but it appears our places in it are going to be rather more clearly defined…..something along the lines of the old class system.

Do they really believe that the ordinary people are going to accept such a non place in society and ‘for the sake of their country’ sing in their chains? I doubt it, such as I doubt their ability to convince the people of Bewsey that the future of Warrington is safe in their hands.
