Titanic – the Musical!

ALMOST 100 years after the sinking of the Titanic, a Warrington-based theatre company is to stage a musical based on the tragedy.

Maury Yeston’s show will be performed by the Centenary Theatre Company at The Brindley Theatre, Runcorn from November 16-20.
The story of the Titanic, made famous by the film starring Leonardo Di Caprio and Kate Winslet, is particularly relevant to the area, as the ship was painted in Liverpool, before sailing from Southampton.
Not only this but the ship’s owner J. Bruce Ismay was born and lived in Liverpool and many of the crew who died on board would have been from the area. This includes the six most senior engineers, to who there is a memorial at the Pier Head, Liverpool dedicated to “the engine room heroes”.
The event occurred in the early hours April 15, 1912 when the so called “unsinkable ship” collided with an iceberg and was fully submerged in the icy Atlantic Ocean just two hours later.
Out of the 2,223 passengers and crew on board, 1,517 died. The tragic story, retold in Titanic the Musical, was so well received on Broadway that it won 5 Tony Awards, including the award for Best Musical.
The award-winning Centenary Theatre Company – formerly known as Crosfields Amateur Operatic Society – is more than 100-years-old.
