Timely reminder from the taxman

ANYONE who sends in their 2009-10 self assessment tax returns on paper has just two days to meet the October 31 deadline.
Around 78,000 people in Warrington file self assessment returns every year – but about three quarters of them file returns online, which gives them an extra three months to send them in.
But the people who still file paper returns face a £100 penalty if they miss the deadline.
A spokeswoman for HM Revenue and Customs said: “Online filing has other advantages too. Your tax is calculated automatically, you get an immediate online acknowledgement once you’ve filed and it’s processed faster, so any money you’re owed is repaid more quickly.
Registering for online filing is simple – visit the HMRC website at www.hmrc.gov.uk/online and click “Register (new users)”.
