Sex offenders: a third live locally

MORE than a third of Cheshire’s registered sex offenders live in Warrington or Halton.
This is revealed in the annual report on the Cheshire, Halton and Warrington Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangement (MAPPA).
The police, probation service, prison service and other relevant agencies work together to protect the public from the risk posed by offenders subject to MAPPA – violent offenders, sex offenders and other offenders considered dangerous.
The report reveals that 896 offenders in Cheshire were under MAPPA management on March 31, of which 663 were registered sex offenders.
The overall figure is up 78 on the previous year while the number of sex offenders has risen by 24.
The number of violent offenders is up by 53.
A total of 234 registered sex offenders live in Warrington or Halton.
Assistant Chief Constable Phil Thompson (pictured) said that as a result of MAPPA enforcement during the year, 21 offenders were returned to custody and five registered sex offenders were cautioned or convicted for failing to notify the authorities of required information.
He said: “This is challenging and demanding work, involving dedication by the staff involved.
“This work is the less visible side of policing, but the day-to-day management of dangerous people, jointly with other agencies such as probation, is vital in providing effective public protection in all of our communities.”
John Davidson, assistant chief executive of Cheshire Probation said: “I believe that multi-agency arrangements remain the most effective way to manage the most dangerous offenders.
“The work that we do is becoming more visible to the public as we seek to reassure the community that they are being protected.”
