MP scores RL world cup success

WARRINGTON North MP Helen Jones claims to have secured the commitment of the Government to support the 2013 Rugby League World Cup in the same way as they are supporting the Rugby Union World Cup two years later.
She said: “Until my intervention, the Government had not committed to supporting the Rugby League World Cup in the same way as they are supporting the Rugby Union World Cup.
“I wanted to know if that was because Rugby League is a northern sport.
“I’m pleased that the Government will now be supporting the Rugby League World Cup and that there is no bias against the code due to its northern roots.
“The event will bring important investment to areas that will be hosting matches.”
Ms Jones (right) secured the support after questioning Hugh Robertson, under Secretary of State, Culture, Olympics, Media and Sport during questions in Parliament.
She asked: “Will the Minister explain why the Government have decided to underwrite the 2015 rugby union world cup, but will not give the same guarantees to the 2013 rugby league world cup?
“To paraphrase a famous comedian: ‘Is it because we is northern?'”
Mr Robertson responded: “Tempting though it is, the answer is absolutely not…my intention is to treat both similarly.”
