Death of council veteran

THE death has occurred of former councillor and Honorary Alderman Terry Whelan who, until he stepped down in May, was the longest serving member of Warrington Borough Council.
He represented the Orford Ward, was a former chairman of the planning committee and was respected by members of all political parties.
A council spokeswoman said: “He had a gentle approach to matters but was also quietly very persistent.
“His belief in public service and contributing to community life was exemplary and he was a role model. He never sought reward, honours, chairmanships and privileges for his service.”
During his time on the council, Honorary Alderman Whelan served on most of the committees, but planning and personnel were his main interests.
He had a distinguished war record, serving in the RAF and flying in Lancaster bombers.
After the war, he worked for many years at the Rubery Owen wire plant in Warrington.
His faith was vital to him, and he was a member of St Stephen’s RC Church, Orford.
He was predeceased by his wife, Mary and leaves two daughters.
