A MAN falsely claimed almost £16,000 in benefit, magistrates heard at Warrington.
Sardar Guli Ali, aged 26, of Tyne Close, Warrington pleaded guilty to eight offences of fraud in relation to housing benefit, council tax benefit and jobseekers allowance between March 2006 and December 2008.
He was ordered to do 150 hours unpaid work and pay £500 costs, in addition to repaying overpayments of housing totalling £15,894.
The court heard he had dishonestly claimed to be unemployed when in fact he was in paid employment.
Ali appeared in court with an interpreter.
After the hearing, Adrian Webster, the council’s benefits manager, said: “Deliberately withholding information that affects your claim is stealing. That’s why we are targeting benefit thieves. We’re closing in on benefit thieves with every means at our disposal.”
