The chimney fire makes a come-back

FIRE crews at Warrington have expressed surprise after being called out twice in two days to deal with ….a chimney fire.
Once the most common type of domestic blaze, the chimney fire has almost entirely disappeared along with the coal fires which caused them. One firefighter said in the 10 years he has worked at Warrington he recalls only about four.
He said: “To get two in two days is quite remarkable.”
The two fires, one in Orford Lane and the other in a modern, three-storey house at Browning Park Drive, Winwick, were both caused by debris from birds’ nests falling down the chimney and collecting behind a gas fire.
Crews had to search for the seat of the fire using a thermal imaging camera, isolate the gas supplies and remove the gas fires. The fires were then tackled with an extinguisher.
The official advice for avoiding the new-style chimney fire is to have gas fires checked annually by a qualified gas engineer.
