Warning on clothing donations

PEOPLE in Warrington are being warned to make sure that if they donate clothes that they go to bona fide charity.
Trading Standards officers say that people may receive a leaflet through the door or get a flyer in the street asking for donations.
They advise people to beware, as some leaflets which look as if they are from a charity are from companies which profit from collections.
Although these companies are operating legally it is estimated that genuine charities lose over £1 million per year through theft and people giving to non-charity companies.
Trading Standards officers offer tips on how to distinguish between the leaflets.
They say check it is for a registered charity. If it is, the registered charity number can be checked by calling 0845 3000 218 or visiting the online register of charities at www.charitycommission.gov.uk
A registered company number means the organisation is registered with Companies House.
The charity should be named, and people to be wary of wording that just says, for instance, “elderly at Christmas” or “Romanian orphans.”
Officers advise checking the bag to see if the company is profit making, how much money goes to charity and whether there is a phone number. If in doubt they should take items directly to a charity shop.
Borough council executive member for community services Roy Smith said: “Genuine charities rely on the goodwill of the general public. Donating your clothing and other goods to these charities is a great way to help people who are in need.
“While the law can deal with those that falsely claim to be either charities or collecting on behalf of charities, it is extremely difficult to trace these anonymous collectors. I would ask everyone to keep giving, but read the leaflets carefully and make sure you know who you are giving to.”
