£33,000 facelift for beauty spot

WORK has started on the next stages of restoring a popular Warrington beauty spot.
A £33,935 contract for work at Ackers Pit in Stockton Heath has been awarded to David Webster and Son Ltd of Widnes.
Work is expected to take about five weeks and will include a new weir feature in Mill Lane, grass seeding, aquatic planning, new seating and work on the perimeter hedges and footpaths.
The beauty spot, owned by Stockton Heath Parish Council, has been the subject of restoration for more than 12 months. So far more than £47,000 has been spend on work including de-silting.
Proposals for the work so far were approved in February last year and work started in the spring. It was expected that the site would re-open last year.
That work was funded by the parish council with additional funds from Warrington Anglers Association, £15,000 from the Environment Agency and £25,000 from an environment improvement fund.
The parish council recently sold the fishing rights in perpetuity for the pit to Warrington Anglers for £30,000. The current work will be funded by the parish council using some of the proceeds of the sale and money from its own funds.
