Cricketers defy the weather

THE cricket season is under way – and despite the bad weather of recent weeks which left some grounds more like swamps, most clubs in the Warrington area managed to play their opening games.
In the Right Move Abroad Cheshire County League, Warrington made a good start in their return to division one with a 75-run victory at Bollington.
Batting first, Warrington declared on 169-8, Hughes hitting 60 and Hutchinson 42 not. The home side were
dismissed for 94 with Aussie Steve Heydon taking 3-10.
In division two, Grappenhall got the better of a drawn game with Hale Barns at Broad Lane.
Grappenhall batted first and posted 167-8 declared, sharp hitting 52 and Titchard 42. The visitors were hanging on at 94-8 at the close, Park taking 5-24 for the home side.
In the Meller Braggins Cheshire League, Lymm Oughtrington Park were denied victory by one wicket at Weaverham.Batting first, Lymm were dismissed for 135 and reduced the home side to 108-9 before the overs ran out.
Stretton got off to a winning start at home, defeating Chelford by 66 runs. Batting firest, Stretton totalled 133 and then dismissed the visitors for 67.In the Cheshire Alliance division one, Appleton got off to a disappointing start, going down by eight wickets in a low scoring game at home to Stalybridge St Pauls.Appleton batted first and were dismissed for 86. The visitors were 89-2 with time to spare.
In division two, Glazebury travelled to Langley and went down by four wickets.Batting first, Glazebury reached a respectable 144-8, opener Gareth Banks hitting 63 and Andy Calvert an unbeaten 37. The home side replied with 145-6.
Rylands started their season with a six wicket victory over Styal at Warrington. The visitors batted first and were dismissed for 107. Rylands replied with 109-4, P Knowles 44 and R Banks 32.
In division three, Glazebury 2nd drew an evenly balanced game with Capenhurst.
Glazebury batted first and totalled 166, mainly due to a fine 64 from skipper Andy Durrington and 44 from Phil McCue. Capenhurst looked well placed to win but tight bowling restricted their batsmen and they finished on 155-4.
Appleton 2nd went down by nine runs in a low scoring game at Mossley where the home side were bowled out for 76, E Pugh taking 5-14 and C Tomlinson 3-32. After tea, Appleton were tumbled out for 67, Marcus Pepper being the only batsmen to show resistance with 37.
