Wheelie good scooter training

Warrington Council’s school travel adviser is delivering the first ever scooter training day for youngsters at a local school.

Pupils from reception, year 1 and year 2 of St Augustine’s Primary School, Latchford, will be getting their ‘scooter smart’ training from Lesley Paterson and Latchford PCSO Tony Spruce.

The scooter course aims to teach children how to stay safe when near the roads as well as making sure they look out and give way to other people using the pavements. The children will each receive a certificate at the end of the course.

Cllr Jean Carter, executive board member for children’s services, said: “With this training we are hoping to encourage more active, healthier and safer journeys to school.

“It is also part of our work to reduce the number of cars on the school run as parents can then either let their children scoot to school or drive part of the way to school and scoot the rest.”

The school is part of a national scheme called ModeshiftSTARS, a sustainable travel to school project which is funded by the Department for Transport.

They have already achieved the bronze award and are close to achieving their Silver. The scheme has only been running in Warrington since September – St Augustine’s was the first to achieve bronze and will be the first to achieve silver.
