WARRINGTON Wolves returned to the top of the Super League table with an emphatic 16-48 victory at Widnes to complete a league double over their local rivals.

It was Warrington’s first Super League win at Widnes since September 2012 and completed a league double,  with Head Coach Tony Smith delighted with the response from last week’s defeat at bottom of the league Huddersfield.

Smith said: “It was a good response from last week.We wanted to get on the front foot and we did for most of the night and were full of energy.

“Widnes made us work hard and defended strongly and the score doesn’t really reflect the full extent of the game.”

Smith was particularly pleased with the performance of Joe Westerman who he said was “finding his way in the team.”

Warrington’s tries came from Gidley (5) Penny (10,56) Westerman (18,38) Westwood (33) and Ratchford (62,65) with Gidley landing seven conversions and Ratchford one.

Widnes scored tries through Mellor (15) Thompson (46) and Marsh (68) with Hanbury landing two conversions.
