Mayor’s good news for Frodsham Youth Association

MAYOR of Frodsham Fran Sutton had good news for Frodsham Youth Club when she dropped in to present Duke of Edinburgh Awards to members.
In addition to presenting Bronze winners and hearing a presentation from the Silver DoE group, she was able to announce that Frodsham Town Council had agreed to award a grant of £8,200 to the club.
This followed the council’s decision, at their monthly meeting, to increase their annual grant to Frodsham Youth Association from £8,000 to £8,200.
Councillors had heard a presentation from Youth Association chairman Simon Taylor about how the youth club had thrived since 2008 – when it had been on the verge of collapse – and now had 150 young people attending on a weekly basis.
He said the club was now holding five sessions a week and its goal was to open seven days a week.
It is the only youth club in the borough to open on Friday and Saturday evenings.
Members of the youth club also addressed the council – and received a spontaneous round of applause from councillors and members of the public present.
Since Cheshire West and Chester Council  withdrew from providing foundation grants, many youth clubs in the borough had struggled.  But in  Frodsham  the Town Council stepped in to provide a vital foundation grant.
For every £1  the council grants, the club raises £4 – ensuring it is one of the most active youth clubs in the region.   But without the council’s grant, the club would close.
Cllr Sutton said: “The council is very happy to support all the great activities that go on at the club. I wish we could give more!  Tonight’s presentations just show what our young people can do given the chance.”
