TRAVELLERS who have set up an illegal encampment on the Appleton/Grappenhall Heys border have ignored an eviction notice to vacate the site.
The group, involving four families from Ireland, received an eviction notice the vacate the private land in a lay-by at junction of Lumb Brook Road and Witherwin Avenue by 12 noon yesterday (Thursday). But the encampment was still in place this morning.
A Warrington Borough Council spokesperson said: “A section 77 notice was served on Wednesday, giving the group until 12noon yesterday to leave. The group failed to adhere to the notice and have remained on site.
“We have prepared paperwork for our legal team to request a court date, and a summons will be issued in due course.”
Local MP Andy Carter visited the encampment on Tuesday afternoon and has been liaising with the borough council in a bid to have the encampment, which is on private land removed.
Mr Carter said: “Warrington Council have still not finalised a Transit Site despite allocating £2m in their budget. With a site in place occupations of more than two caravans would be directed to the site or else be required to leave the area.”
