MORE than 250 people turned up for an Open Day at Warrington’s Paddington Meadows.
Organised by the New Cut Heritage and Ecology Group, it was part of a national meadows open day and celebrated the continued retention of an important green space in the middle of the borough.
Specifically aimed at families with young children, craft tents with such activities as willow weaving had two year olds creating stars out of willow twigs and face masks out of wild flowers.
“Colouring in” sheets were popular, as were spotter sheets for the youngsters to identify wildlife. Children delighted to be able to run about using butterfly nets to catch insects and have the experts on hand to identify them prior to release.
The Carbon Landscape team played a big part with model insects and a recreated boggy moss land that could be stood on and its ability to sink the human frame tested.
Wildlife experts found themselves particularly busy when more than 40 people asked to go on wildlife walks around the meadow.
Some were fortunate to see rare birds including Cettis Warbler, White Throats and Blackcaps.
Spokeswoman Anne Price said: “ This type of event takes a great deal of our volunteers’ time to organise and it is good to see the public turn up in greater numbers than ever, but the best thing was the enjoyment of the children who learned a great deal and enjoyed it so much “
