DETECTIVES have released a CCTV image of a man they want to speak to in connection with a serious assault in Warrington town centre.
Between 4.30am and 4.50am on Sunday May 5 two men were talking to each other on Academy Way, near to DW Sports Fitness on Bank Street, when they were approached by a stranger asking for a cigarette.
They told him that they did not have any cigarettes and an argument ensued.
The stranger then punched one of the men – a 22-year-old from Liverpool – in the face.
The victim was taken to hospital with serious facial injuries that require ongoing medical treatment.
Enquiries in relation to the incident are ongoing and detectives believe that the man in the CCTV image may have vital information to help with their investigation.
They are urging anyone who recognises him or thinks they may know who he is to get in touch.
Detectives also want to speak to anyone who was in the area around the time the incident occurred and believes that they witnessed something which may aid the investigation.
Detective Constable John Parry, of Warrington CID, said: “We believe that the man in the CCTV image may have important information to help with our ongoing investigation into a serious assault in Warrington town centre.
“The victim sustained serious facial injuries that require ongoing medical treatment and we are determined to establish who was responsible and bring them to justice.

“The same goes for anyone who was in the area and witnessed the incident or anything else that may be relevant, and for anyone who has CCTV or dashcam footage that may help our investigation.
“With there having been a number of taxis parked up near to where the incident took place, we are particularly keen to speak to any taxi drivers who saw what took place.
“I would also like to appeal directly to the man in the CCTV image to get in touch.”
