THREE local businessmen are taking on a 100-mile cycle challenge to support St Rocco’s hospice.
Rob Foden, Carl Palmer and Chris Downey will team up with five friends to take on the Prudential Ride London 100 later this month.
They have previously competed in Strictly St Rocco’s, taking to the dance floor with professional partners, in order to raise much-needed funds to help the charity look after people in the community living with a terminal illness.
Rob said: “Dancing for St. Rocco’s was fantastic, but then we thought about what we could do next? As a charity we know that St. Rocco’s really needs every penny.
“Some of us have taken part in Ride London before –it’s hard, but we thought that it would be a good one for us as a group.”
Carl Palmer, Norman Tarbuck, Julian Parrington, Chris and Rob’s son, Daniel are entering the race for the first time but Ben Dawbarn, Paul Dixon and Rob have taken part several times before. Have the three of them been sharing any tips?
“There is a training routine but generally the idea is just to get in as many miles as possible before the race,” said Ben, “It is a tough event, especially Box Hill, but it will be worth it.”
They know that it will be a long day with a very early start, probably around 4.30am, with the 25,000 riders being sent off in waves.
Rob said: “As a group we are hoping to finish in a reasonable time and collectively we’d love to raise £10,000 for St. Rocco’s. They do a great job there and we all have to think that one day any one of us might need their help.”
“It’s a no-brainer,” said Ben, “St. Rocco’s is there to help the people of Warrington and Warrington is our place.”
