THE campaign to save Culcheth Village Green – led by Warrington North MP Helen Jones and local councillors – has gathered pace, with hundreds of residents signing up in support of quick intervention by Warrington Borough Council.
The campaign has been supported by an online petition which calls on the council to provide a full drainage scheme for the Green, and liaise with United Utilities to resolve the flooding problems once and for all.
Ms Jones said: “The response so far from my constituents to the campaign to ‘Save our Village Green’ has shown how much they value this fantastic community asset.”
The MP said the borough council’s chief executive had assured her the authority was committed to carrying out a feasibility programme to deal with the drainage issues.
“I hope that they will progress this quickly so that my constituents can be reassured that everything possible is being done to restore this treasured amenity for people in Culcheth and the surrounding area.”
In a joint statement, the three borough councillors for Culcheth, Glazebury and Croft, Matt Smith, Joan Grime and Jan Davidson, said: “We have already made significant progress with the Council by ensuring that a feasibility study and costings are commissioned. Now it is important that we do not let the matter rest.
“The support that local residents have given to our online petition shows the strength of feeling, not just from the villages we represent, but from surrounding areas. We are urging the council not to ignore the voices of local people, but to act quickly and determinedly to put a scheme in place.
“It is clear to us that work to save the village green fits perfectly with the council’s corporate priorities. Welcoming open spaces help us to promote community cohesion as well as encouraging residents to stay fit and healthy.”
