WARRINGTON’S Victoria Park has been officially opened following a £4.5 investment which has transformed it into one of the North West’s leading outdoor community sports venues.
The five-year transformation, carried out by the borough council, has resulted an expanse of 67 acres of sporting facilities and parkland.
Cllr Kate Hannon, the council’s lead member for leisure, community and culture, said: “Victoria Park is now a key sporting, leisure and community events location, not just for Warrington but for the whole region and is certainly a showcase venue for the town.”
The impressive, new, fully accessible stadium provides spectators and the community with a high quality, multi-purpose, facility. It includes changing rooms and showers, a 320-seat stand and a multi-function space for functions and events, with a balcony overlooking the new athletics track.
Flood protection was a priority for the design of the building because of the proximity of the River Mersey.
The large space underneath provides a covered warm-up track but also enables water to flow under the building without damaging the facility. The project also re-laid the car park and installed drainage to the site and the pitches. There are several new high quality rugby and football pitches including a championship standard fenced and floodlit pitch in front of the new stand.
The stadium was fully funded by Warrington Borough Council and will be available to hire in conjunction with the other facilities within the park.
Warrington Wolves and Latchford Albion have already held some matches at the venue and are looking forward to many more fixtures making use of the park’s excellent facilities.
Other facilities at the park include: a large skate park, play area, bowling greens, picnic benches and angling.
