Postal workers ballot on strike action

POSTAL workers are to ballot on industrial action over a controversial decision to close a sorting office.
The communication workers’ union is forecasting a massive “yes” vote in favour of strike action if the planned closure of Lymm sorting office goes ahead on July 14.
The Post Office plans to transfer the 18 jobs at Lymm to Altrincham.
But staff claim this will disrupt their lives – and result in a reduced service for Lymm.
The row follows earlier decisions to close a number of post offices across Warrington – including one in Lymm.
Warrington South Prospective Conservative Parliamentary candidate David Mowat has condemned the proposed closure as “insensitive” and local councillor Sheila Woodyatt described the situation as “a shambles.”
She said: “This means postmen are going to be sent in cars and buses to Altrincham to sort the mail and bring it back to Lymm.”
Warrington Borough Council leader Ian Marks said: “I am appalled at the treatment of our local postmen.”
He called for urgent talks with the postal workers union and the local community.
The Communication Workers’ Union said it had been left with no alternative but to ballot for industrial action.
They are calling on Warrington South MP Helen Southworth to support their action.
