WARRNGTON’S piping tradition was proudly represented on the international stage on Saturday as the Warrington Pipe Band competed at the prestigious World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow.
The annual “Worlds”, staged at Glasgow Green, brought together 211 bands from 14 countries, with thousands of pipers, drummers and spectators attending the two-day event.
For the Warrington musicians, competing against some of the finest pipe bands from around the world was a major achievement and provided an opportunity to showcase the town’s long-established connection with competitive piping.
The band had been building towards the championships throughout the season, having also competed at major national events. At the British Pipe Band Championships in May, Warrington finished 14th in Grade 4B, demonstrating its ability to compete at a high level against strong opposition.
This year’s World Championships saw a major upset, with Canada’s Simon Fraser University Pipe Band claiming the Grade One title – the first non-UK winner since 2010. Northern Ireland’s Field Marshal Montgomery finished second, with Boghall and Bathgate Caledonia third.
The Warrington appearance continues a proud local piping tradition, with the town having a long association with the World Pipe Band Championships and previous successes on the international stage.
For Warrington’s current generation of pipers and drummers, Saturday’s appearance in Glasgow was another opportunity to put the town firmly on the world piping map after a lengthy absence.
