Daly stunner sends Warrington Town to away win

WARRINGTON Town made it three wins from four at the start of the new season with a 2-1 victory over Ilkeston Town.

Reece Daly found the top corner from 20 yards early in the second half to put them 2-0 up and it was a relatively comfortable final quarter, despite Anthony Dwyer’s goal with Ilkeston’s only real opportunity after the break giving the hosts hope.

Similar to their first away game at Guiseley, the Yellows took time to grow in to the game and that meant the Robins had the better of the first 15 minutes, Mateusz Hewelt turning Elwalid Elhaghany’s flick around a post. Hewelt also tipped over the bar a rising shot from Lewis Belgrave.

But the Yellows soon took control of the game and Ben Elliott forced the first save out of Sam Wilson, who got down low to stop a shot following a turn in the box.

Lewis Earl lashed a shot wide before Zayn Sadiq started to get some space on the left hand side, flashing a ball right across the face of goal and just beyond the chasing Elliott.

On the stroke of half time, the same two players linked up to open the scoring. Elliott battled to keep the ball and dig a pass through the defence for Sadiq to surge on to and fire a shot across the ‘keeper for his second goal of the season.

And just as they did against Guiseley having scored late in the first half, they scored early in the second, and in some style too. Daly took the ball forward and it opened up for him to find the top corner with his left-foot from range.

The Yellows were well in control and only the woodwork prevented them adding a third, Elliott denied his first goal for the club by the crossbar after another sharp turn and shot from the edge of the box.

Ilkeston freshened things up with some changes but had offered little going forward, until they grabbed a lifeline with 15 minutes to play when an awkward bouncing ball was seized upon by Dwyer, who then managed to reach out to poke beyond Hewelt.

They never really did anything with that foothold though, and the Yellows were able to see out the game with relative ease, Bobby Bjork coming off the bench to help wind down the clock.
