As National Small Business Week gets underway tomorrow, Monday, June 1st, a Warrington business leader has highlighted the critical role that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) play in driving both local and national economic growth.
With smaller enterprises making up the vast majority of commercial activity across the country, the annual campaign serves as a vital platform for showcasing entrepreneurial talent and fostering local supply chains.

Chamber Chief Executive Stephen Fitzsimons
Stephen Fitzsimons, CEO of Warrington Chamber Plus, emphasised the agility and regional importance of these businesses, saying:”Given that over 95% of the UK economy is made up of Small & Medium-sized Enterprises, Small Business Week offers a fantastic opportunity for them to promote their products and services.
“Warrington’s SME community is especially vibrant, from Stockton Heath’s bars and restaurants to the growing digital sector at the Causeway. Smaller companies are able to quickly get their product to market, scale up for growth and diversify into other sectors. This is true for members of Warrington Chamber Plus, and they appreciate being able to network with their peers at the Warrington Business Conference, Property Review and Business Awards.
“Most of their business is conducted within the local economy, buying support services as well as promoting their own. Some will go on to become the next Total Steel, Arne Clothing or Martin Dawes. However, most will be content to stay nimble – key players with the SME community.”
The week-long celebration comes at a time when local procurement and economic resilience are at the forefront of business strategies. Unlike larger corporations, smaller businesses tend to recirculate a higher percentage of their revenue back into their immediate communities by hiring local talent and utilising nearby professional support services.
The week aims to connect these nimble operators, helping them share resources, collaborate on new ventures, and navigate current market challenges together.
