Mayoral candidate for Cheshire & Warrington Ben Fletcher has made a pledge of ‘Not One Penny’ Rise in Council Tax, should he be elected next May.

Mr Fletcher, the Conservative candidate for Mayor of Cheshire and Warrington, has launched a new campaign pledge: he will not raise council tax.

The Mayor has the power to raise Council Tax through a mayoral precept. Mr Fletcher has committed to not use that power if elected Mayor in May 2027. This follows the example set by other Conservative Mayors who have been able to significantly improve economic growth and public services without costing residents more.
Mr Fletcher said: “Families across Cheshire and Warrington are having to live within their means. I think the government should do the same. As Mayor, I will not raise council tax. Not. One. Penny.”
He says Cheshire and Warrington’s Labour councils, and the Labour Police & Crime Commissioner, are raising taxes faster than residents’ pay is increasing. Services and public spaces continue to deteriorate due to poor leadership and mismanaged finances. The government needs to respect hard-working taxpayers and businesses, and live within its means.
Mr Fletcher will use his business experience to lead an efficient and effective Combined Authority that creates plans that win private investment. Over the last 5 years, he has led processes that have secured more than £1 Billion of private investment into the north west.
He added: “The new Mayor has to be single-mindedly focused on creating greater prosperity for people and families working hard to achieve a good life. Taxing people more is not the answer.”
