ST Thomas’ Church Hall was transformed into a vibrant hub of wartime celebration on Friday evening as the Stockton Heath community united to mark Victory in Europe (VE) Day.
The headline community event, which commemorated the historic end of World War II in Europe, was entirely masterminded by 82-year-old local great-grandmother and community champion, Helen Curwen, following on from last year’s suvccessful 80th anniversary celebrations.
Having lived in Stockton Heath for over seven decades, Helen took it upon herself to rally the village, hand-decorating the hall and securing local support to create another unforgettable night of remembrance and joy.
The atmosphere inside the packed St Thomas’ Church Hall on Ellesmere Road was electric, draped in Union Jack bunting that Helen and her husband, Len, had personally put up across the village.
The highlights of the evening included The Davies Sisters who delivered powerful, moving performances of iconic wartime hits that had the entire crowd singing along.
Every single attendee was provided with a flag to wave, filling the hall with a sea of red, white, and blue during the patriotic musical numbers.
Local shop owners across Stockton Heath and The Forge Shopping Centre generously stepped up to donate prizes valued at over £50.
All ticket sales and raffle proceeds from the £10 entry fee are being donated directly to charity, proving once again the deep generosity embedded within the South Warrington community. The evening complemented a wider series of civic tributes at St Thomas’ Church on London Road, sealing Stockton Heath’s reputation for honoring its wartime generation with true heart and flare.
