Public meeting called to explore UK Town of Culture Bid for Lymm

RESIDENTS and community groups in Lymm are being invited to a public meeting to explore forming an independent, community-led group to develop an initial Expression of Interest for the UK Town of Culture 2028 competition.

The meeting will take place on Tuesday 27 January at 7.00pm at Lymm Parish Hall, Pepper Street.

Cllr Sally Sharma, Chair of Lymm Parish Council, said: “Could Lymm be a UK small town of culture? We think so. This meeting is a chance for people to come along, have their say, and help shape a bid that showcases what’s great about Lymm — its culture, creativity, and community life. I’d really encourage residents to come along, share their ideas, and tell us what we have to offer and how we could make it even better.”

The UK Town of Culture programme aims to support places across the country to celebrate their identity, strengthen community pride, and develop a shared cultural vision with lasting benefits. The meeting is aimed at people who are interested in being actively involved in organising a bid, from shaping ideas and telling Lymm’s story to working with local organisations and, if shortlisted, helping develop a full submission.
While the idea has the support of key people within the parish, the intention is for the bid to be led by an independent group, bringing together residents, creatives, community organisations, and local partners.
Organisers are keen to reassure residents that taking part does not mean declaring Lymm a town or a village, nor does it imply any legal or governance change. There is no legal definition or practical difference between a town and a village in the context of the competition.
Councillor Graham Gowland said:“This is about giving people the chance to come together and explore a positive opportunity for Lymm. We’re looking for energy, ideas, and people who want to help shape something that reflects our community and its creativity.”
Cllr Colin Oakley said: “This is a great opportunity for local people to come together and help shape something positive for Lymm. The strength of any bid will come from the community itself, and I’d encourage anyone with an interest in culture, creativity, or community life to come along and get involved.”
The meeting is open to anyone who would like to learn more or contribute to the organising group.
Launched by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport applications will be open until 31 March 2026 for Expressions of Interest.
The competition is part of the government’s Plan for Change, driving local economic growth and opportunity.
Although techincally a village in the borough of Warrington, Lymm is the size of a small town and has a long history and heritage – and even its own official Town Crier!
