Green heating for village hall

A NEW, more efficient and sustainable heating system is being installed at High Legh Village Hall.
It involves a combination of gas, electric and solar energy.
New gas mains have been installed to serve the 100-year-old building.
Electrically powered radiators are being fitted in the hall, kitchen, toilets and upstairs meeting room which take hot water from a new, gas powered boiler to rapidly heat up the hall just before a meeting or other event takes place. Control systems will ensure only the areas to be used will be heated – at the times when they are needed. Low level of background heating will be maintained to prevent pipes freezing and insulation is to be provided to reduce heat loss.
Community Association officials believe the new system will be more cost effective than the previous electric-only system.
During the day, electricity generated by solar panels will drive a pump and fans to provided quick heating. It is hoped to eventually buy a “green” heat pump so the gas boiler would only be needed when outside temperatures fall below 4C.
The new radiators and boiler have been tested and are working – despite delays caused by the bad weather before Christmas. But the original electric heating is still working in case there are teething problems.
