WARRINGTON campaigner John Mulhall wants more people to register on the electoral roll or apply for postal votes at the the borough council’s Contact Centre, in Horsemarket Street.
He believes many people do not realise what the Contact Centre is – and certainly do not know they can use it ensure they are on the electoral roll.
He plans to raise the issue at the next meeting of the borough council on March 7.
Mr Mulhall (pictured) has also raised the matter with Warrington South MP David Mowat, who has taken it up on his behalf.
In a letter to borough council chief executive Diana Terris, the MP says: “Some electors in the town often struggle to find time to vote on polling day whilst many who are older find it difficult to visit their polling station. Therefore I feel there are a considerable number of Warrington residents who would benefit from the Contact Centre promoting postal ballots.”
Mr Mulhall said: “The council has an excellent and well-staffed Contact Centre but is not making full use of it.
“They should have a prominent notice in the window saying that people can register to vote, or vote by post.
“They are good, big windows and they are not being used for anything. Other services could be promoted in the same way.”
Mr Mulhall would also like to see council agenda papers and minutes available to the public at the centre.

You can advertise all you like, it isn’t going to get people to register or vote anymore than those who currently do!
Well done Mr Mulhall – The Contact Centre is a benefit to all of Warrington. The staff are very proficient at what they do. The Electoral Services in the Town are very good and I’m sure they will look at all ways to encourage people to register to Vote.
It’s a shame that of the 90% + that do register only a small amount vote.
Cllr, perhaps that is because people are not impressed with ANY of the parties.
heaven forbid SS…. they are all perfect; don’t you know they tick all the right boxes to get 5 star ratings???
I’d like to think it’s all about freedom of choice. If you want to vote or if you don’t want to vote.
