Children’s Society survey says 2-in-3 people think Christmas is too commercial

A NEW poll from The Children’s Society reveals that two in three people in the North West – including Warrington – think Christmas is too commercial.
They long for the nostalgic traditions of their childhood, such as Christingle – and churches in Warrington are responding.

The nationally representative survey of 2000 UK adults shows a strong desire to reconnect with simpler, community-focused celebrations. Half of adults in the North West say they enjoy, or would take part in festive traditions such as Christingle, a well-loved festive tradition with deep community roots and is steeped in warmth and meaning.

The Children’s Society is celebrating the launch of this year’s Christingle season with more than 2000 Christingle events taking place across the UK and dozens happening across the North West to raise vital funds for children facing loneliness, mental health challenges, exploitation and abuse.

Mark Russell, The Children’s Society’s chief executive, said: “We hear from families who feel that Christmas has become frantic, commercial and disconnected from the things that truly matter. Christingle is a chance to slow down, reconnect, and bring meaning back to the season.

“Christingle events help raise vital funds so we can support children who feel alone, overwhelmed or unheard – offering a safe space, trusted adults and practical help when life can seem too much.”
In Warrington, the following Christingle events are taking place, all raising funds for the Children’s Society:
Dec 14, 4pm: Christ Church, Station Road, Padgate; St James’ Church, Wilderspool Causeway; St James Church, Canons Road.
Dec 24, 3pm: Warrington Parish Church; 4pm St Ann’s Church, Central Avenue; St John’s Church, Old Chester Road, Walton.
