DESPITE starting the season with just two players Priestley College girls’ rugby academy is celebrating winning the college cup final.
In the final they defeated Calderdale College 24-20, showing so much focus they didn’t even realise they had won when the final whistle was blown.
“It was a tough match because we had played them before and so had some doubts,” said halfback Seren James.
“We got into the match and boosted each other’s confidence and made one another believe we could do it.”
The final saw a back-and-forth first half that left Priestley starting the second behind. However, the players came back and showed outstanding resilience to push on until the final whistle to secure the win.
It is an incredible achievement after head coach Emily Tandy took over the role at the start of the season and only had two girls at the first training session.
However, with passion and consistency, she was able to build the Warrington Wolves Development Academy into a full squad.
“The start was pretty underwhelming to be honest, but little did we know how enjoyable and successful the season would go on to be,” she said.
“This season has proven that hard work and dedication does pay off.”
Emily also paid tribute to Lilly Day, a member of the academy who sadly died during the season.
“We are grateful for the impact she had in the short time she played for the team, inspiring everyone with her talent, passion for the sport and unwavering leadership,” said Emily.
“She is, and will always be, sorely missed.”
