Plan to replace windows in historic church hall in conservation area

PLANS have been submitted for the replacement of windows in a historic church hall in one of the oldest residential streets remaining in Warrington town centre.

The building involved is the Memorial Hall at Wycliffe United Reformed Church, in Bewsey Street which dates from 1901.
Both it and the adjoining church, which dates from 1851, are locally listed buildings and are in the Bewsey Street Conservation Area.
The proposal is to replace existing leaded-light windows which have deteriorated and are no longer weather proof with new timber effect aluminium conservation style windows.
Wycliffe Church itself had to undergo alterations after an earth tremor in 1984 caused a crack in the full height of the towner, which had to be demolished.
Three years ago planning permission was sought to demolish the hall, but borough council planning chiefs refused consent on the grounds that it would have a damaging impact on the conservation area.

Bewsey Street is one of the oldest residential streets remaining in Warrington town centre.
Church authorities say the hall is in a deteriorating condition because of the poor condition of the windows on three sides of the building.
Planning officers are now considering the proposals.
