A beautiful watercolour painting of Warrington’s iconic Town Hall and Golden Gates has been kindly gifted by a local family.
The Thornton family are lifelong Warrington residents, and Mr Thornton worked in the Pathology Labs at both Warrington Infirmary and the General Hospital for over 50 years.
The family lived in hospital staff accommodation on Kendrick Street, which bordered Bank Park, for several years.
In the early 90s whilst visiting the Leeds Building Society in Buttermarket Street, Mr and Mrs Thornton were immediately attracted to a painting of the Town Hall, so much so that they commissioned the artist to paint one for their own home.
The painting, which captures the grandeur of the historic Grade I listed building alongside local residents passing by, offers a glimpse into the town’s past.
Shortly before Mr Thornton died, he expressed a wish that the painting should be seen and appreciated by others. Now, in a generous gesture, the family has loaned the piece so it can be displayed at the Town Hall.
This stunning artwork not only highlights the beauty of the landmark but also celebrates the deep connection between Warrington’s heritage and its people.
It also finishes off the newly decorated corridor in fine style, following a range of recent work to improve the Town Hall. This work included improvements to the ground floor corridor, the reception room and the Tea Room, which was funded from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) following a successful application by The Friends of Warrington Town Hall.
Visitors can now view the painting at the Town Hall, where it will remain on display, offering a unique perspective on one of the town’s most recognisable and beloved sites.
Deputy Leader of the council, Cllr Jean Flaherty, said: “I’m so grateful to the Thornton family for kindly loaning this beautiful painting.
“It’s a wonderful piece that perfectly complements the newly decorated corridor, where everyone who visits the Town Hall can enjoy its unusual juxtaposed perspective.”
