WARRINGTON Borough Council is reminding people to get advice and support on the cost of living, including checking they are claiming all of the benefits they are entitled to.
Colder winter months often bring higher energy bills and less disposable income. During this time, it can be difficult to know where to turn for support – but help is available for those who need it.
Online support is available through the council’s cost of living database, which lists a range of help in several different categories, such as support with food, finances, bills and childcare.
Talking Points are places you can go to get friendly, face-to-face information, support and guidance on the issues that matter to you, including financial support. Talking Points are based across Warrington, including Latchford, Culcheth, Penketh and Fearnhead.
You can also drop into a Talking Point at the Living Well Hub, who run sessions with the Department of Work and Pensions on support with pensions and benefits, as well as funded childcare guidance.
Throughout the winter, there has also been a number of events to reach residents and inform them of the financial support that might be available to them.
Earlier this month, local councillors held a pop up surgery in Dallam, where they provided a number of residents with money advice and support, and information about benefits that they might be entitled to. Due to the success of the event, another pop up surgery is planned in February.
The council also hosted a number of ‘Safe and Well’ drop-in events, which were a one-stop-shop for residents to get advice on how to stay well during the winter months, alongside financial advice and support.
Cllr Sue Emery, cabinet member for poverty, inequality and protection, said: “There is lots of advice and support available for residents who might be struggling, from childcare costs to benefits you might not realise you are entitled to.
“These events have been a great way for residents to explore and discuss what help might be available to them. If you have questions about your benefit entitlements, please check what you’re eligible for or attend a face-to-face event for guidance and advice. It’s important to ensure as many people as possible get the support they’re entitled to.
“Help doesn’t end here. Please talk to any of your local councillors if you need help and advice. We can connect you to services and support. We don’t want anyone in our community to feel isolated or helpless.”
