FOLLOWING a meeting with Peel Ports to discuss the state of the town’s three swing bridges over the Manchester Ship Canal, Warrington South MP Sarah Hall has welcomed recent resurfacing works.
Ms Hall met with Peel Ports to discuss the condition of the swing bridges, raising concerns around the road surface, the paintwork, and the issues with the bridges sticking.
During the meeting Peel Ports expressed a desire to see these issues addressed, discussing the logistical steps which would be needed to make this happen.
Peel Ports completed some temporary pothole repairs on the Knutsford Road bridge on Wednesday 22nd of January, before undertaking full resurfacing works.
This will be a welcome change for South Warrington residents who had previously highlighted the condition of the road surface.
Ms Hall added: “The three swing bridges over the Manchester Ship Canal are a critical part of Warrington’s transport infrastructure and it is vital that they are in good order.
“I know that many residents are concerned about the condition of the bridges, both from a structural perspective and an aesthetic one.
“I am encouraged by the recent work carried out by Peel Ports on the Knutsford Road bridge and I hope that residents who use the Knutsford Road bridge will see an improvement on this stretch.
“More broadly, I know that there is still more work which needs to be done on these bridges and I will be working with Peel Ports and Warrington Borough Council to find a long-term solution which safeguards residents from disruption where possible.
“This is not a problem which will be fixed overnight, but I think it is important that these decisions are made sooner rather than later to prevent any further deterioration.”
