GRAPPENHALL and Thelwall Royal British Legion has launched and appeal for funding for their annual Remembrance Day parade.
They say they are the last British Legion Club in Warrington and feel it is vital to continue the annual parade. Which alternates each years between St Wilfrid’s Church, Grappenhall and All Saints Church, Thelwall.
But they have to fund launches appeal event themselves and last year the cost of traffic management alone was nearly £5,000.
Spokesman Chris Morton said: “Since Covid, when police withdrew their support for policing the route, we have had to fund the entire day ourselves.
“ We also provide food and entertainment for marchers, veterans and families as well as a bagpiper and drummer. We receive no funding from Warrington Borough Council, the Royal British Legion or Cheshire Police although we do receive a small grant from the parish council. Being a small, not for profit business, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to sustain the parade which we feel is vital for the community.
“ To remember those who gave their lives is paramount, not only to reflect, but also to encourage future generations to remember and learn about the greatest sacrifice that people have made. Lest we forget”
