A NUMBER of red flood alerts are in force in Warrington after homes were flooded, as five crews were called in to rescue residents in Bewsey and roads were closed as an emergency incident was declared.
The Environment Agency issued a red flood alert for areas closest to Sankey Brook at Dallam covering Chepstow Close, Colwyn Close, the area around Higham Avenue, Tavlin Avenue, Hodgkinson Avenue, Marshall Avenue, Hawleys Lane and Mullen Close. Some roads were closed off around the town due to flooding.
The Sankey Brook level at Higham Avenue was 3.69 metres just short of the highest-ever recorded at the measuring station of 3.82m during devastating floods in January 2021.
The agency said the trend was rising and urged residents to take action. Many on social media posted pictures of flood damage to homes and in the area.
The Bridgewater Canal burst its banks in Lymm as reported by Warrington Worldwide.
A separate automated flood warning was issued for the wider area in Dallam at risk from Sankey Brook at Dallam on the afternoon of January 1. It read: “An automated flood warning has been issued for this area. This is because river levels are at a height at which flooding is expected. Environment Agency staff are monitoring the situation.
“You should protect yourself and your property and monitor local weather conditions and river levels. Avoid contact with, walking or driving through floodwater. Activate any flood protection products you may have.
“Flood warning area: Areas at risk include properties between Callands Road and Sankey Brook. Other areas at risk include Marshall Avenue, Hawleys Lane, Southworth Avenue, Charter Avenue and Longshaw Street from Hawleys Lane to the allotments.”
Another red flood warning was issued shortly before 5pm for Sankey Brook at Gemini. It said: “Flooding is forecast to affect locations near the Sankey Brook, with low-lying land and roads expected to be most affected particularly around commercial and retail property off Europa Boulevard at Gemini Industrial Park.
“We are closely monitoring the situation and monitoring rainfall and river levels. Take care and avoid walking, cycling or driving through flood water. Don’t put yourself or others at risk.
“Flood warning area: Areas at risk include commercial and retail property off Europa Boulevard at Gemini Industrial Park. Additional properties at risk include parts of Fairbourne Close.”
The Sankey Brook level at Causey Brook at 3.07 metres according to latest readings. Property flooding is possible “once it goes above 2.90 metres”, according to the agency.
Meanwhile, a flood warning was issued for the River Bollin and Agden Brook at Little Bollington. It said: “Flooding is forecast to affect locations near the River Bollin, with low-lying land and roads expected to be most affected, particularly around properties at and around Bollington Mill and Bollington Hall Farm.
“We are closely monitoring the situation and monitoring rainfall and water levels. Flood warning area: Areas at risk include properties at and around Bollington Mill and Bollington Hall farm. Also at risk are property on Lymm Road adjacent to Agden Brook.”
The River Bollin level shortly before 5pm on New Year’s Day at Bollington Mill was 1.49 metres. Property flooding is possible when it goes above 1.30 metres, according to the Environment Agency.
Warrington South MP Sarah Hall issued a statement to Warrington Worldwide saying she is “deeply concerned about the flooding that has affected homes and communities across Warrington South.”
