Warrington singer Aaren James has secured his place in the next stage of ITV’s The Voice UK following an emotional performance in front of the show’s coaches.
The 24-year-old ambulance care assistant was the final contestant to take to the stage during Saturday night’s episode (5 September), hoping to impress coaches Kelly Rowland, will.i.am, Sir Tom Jones, Tom Fletcher and Danny Jones.
Before his performance, Aaren opened up about his close relationship with his nan Kim, who had recently been diagnosed with breast cancer.
He explained that he had moved in with her to look after and support her, telling viewers: “She means the world to me.”
Aaren chose to perform How Do I Say Goodbye by Dean Lewis, a song which had both Kelly Rowland and Sir Tom Jones turning their chairs.
Following the performance, Aaren invited his nan onto the stage, telling the coaches: “My mum and nan are both crying.”
He explained: “Nan is currently in remission and there was a period where we nearly lost her as a family, and she’s been my rock.”
When Aaren asked his nan for advice on which coach he should choose, she pointed towards Kelly and said: “She’s beautiful.”
Turning to Sir Tom, she added: “And he’s handsome.”
But ultimately, she left the decision to her grandson, telling him: “It’s down to you.”
Aaren chose to join Kelly’s team.
The former Destiny’s Child star told Kim: “It’s such a pleasure to meet you, and a blessing to meet a miracle.”
Aaren replied: “She’s my miracle, she really is,” leaving Kelly visibly emotional.
The touching moment also prompted an emotional reaction from viewers watching at home.
One viewer posted: “#TheVoiceUK got me in tears over here.”
