One person treated for smoke inhalation as four fire crews tackle barge fire

FOUR fire crews and two specialist vehicles were called out last night (Thursday) to reports of a barge on fire on the Bridgewater Canal at Grappenhall, Warrington.

Shortly before 9:30 pm fire crews from Lymm, Penketh, Knutsford and Warrington a rope rescue unit and a water incident unit from Lymm attended the fire on Weaste Lane.

A fire involving a barge that was well alight on the canal. Cordons were put in place while crews worked to set up lighting and get a water supply to the fire.

They used a hose reel to extinguish the fire and a thermal imaging camera to check for hot spots within the vessel.

Everyone was accounted for and paramedics attended to help one person, believed to be suffering from smoke inhalation. Crews were in attendance for approximately two and a half hours.
